Beat(les) It

George Harrison’s son, Dhani Harrison, believes that starting a standalone website for digitally distributing The Beatles’ music is a practical option. Selling the Beatles back catalogue through iTunes isn’t satisfactory, and an online store could be revealed in the future.

Harrison explains:

“We’re losing money every day. So what do you do? You have to have your own delivery system, or you have to do a good deal with Steve Jobs. But he says that a download is worth 99 cents, and we disagree.”

Dhani, Dhani.....You're losing money every day...Are ya? Industry royalty rates for single-song plays can run under 10 cents, buttttttt "holders" typically earn a small percentage on each album sold. Chump change? That amounts to millions of dollars in revenue a year when you think of all the radio stations in the world. And guess who the "holders" are....Not Michael Jackson any more...but little Dhani. When MJ or Major Jerk Off ( I mean Michael Jackson) bought the rights to the songs in the 80s they were worth about $48 million, now they estimated to be worth $400 million or more. Ya Dhani I did my research on this one. Most of us can buy a Miley Cyrus, I mean Chili Peppers song here and there on iTunes for a great price of 99c. So why charge me more?

With all the back and forth bickering that goes on there is so much more money that is being lost just from selfishness. Step outside of a world that includes playing thousand dollar guitars and shot putting with Eric Clapton on Tuesday afternoons and see that now more than ever times are hard. Give back to the people like me that worshiped your pops. The guy used to get paid beer for his early gigs and this is how you act. Funny how its all good to put out a version of Rock Band in Sept. with all their songs as well as unreleased ones (which I'm on a waiting list for shhhh..)

Come on, nowadays the right thing to do is what Radiohead and many other bands have been doing. Let the fans pay for the songs what they want to pay for them. The money is gonna come regardless and has already. I liked In Rainbows so much I paid full boat for it. Sucka maybe but I appreciate great music, just like the Beatles did and were. Man o Man I wouldn't be surprised if George Harrison is gently weeping with his guitar at the pearly gates.

That's What She Said,
Mike Love
