A total of 11 Tennessee players with scholarships have left the Volunteers football program under new coach Lane Kiffin, including four since the end of spring practice. A team spokesman confirmed that wide receivers Ahmad Paige and Tyler Maples, offensive guard Darris Sawtelle and quarterback B.J. Coleman have left the program since the team's Orange and White scrimmage game on Apr. 18. Now, to make matters even worse for Kiffen and better for his critics, the HC just received a commitment from a high school player that has been convicted, as a minor, of taking part in the rape of a family member. Defensive end prospect Daniel Hood out of Knoxville was convicted as a 13 year old.
Since taking over the Volunteers program, Lane Kiffin has come under a heck of a lot of heat, to put it mildly.
Kiffin has put together a coaching staff in Knoxville that would outclass the best staff's in most NFL franchises. This includes his father, heralded former Tampa Bay Buc's defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin.
Kiffin has also come under heat for reportedly telling a football recruit that the only thing a degree from the University of Florida will ever get you is a job pumping gas for the rest of your life. Needless to say, his critics have had a lot of ammunition against him.
Kiffin was able to land a tremendous recruit in ESPN.Com's number one high school player coming out in running back Bryce Brown. But that hasn't stopped the flow of former HC Phil Fulmer recruits from leaving the school under the new regime.
ESPN.Com reports:
Kiffin, who was introduced at Tennessee last December, said during a Big Orange Caravan stop earlier this week that he only wants players who want to
play for the Vols.
Hood told theKnoxville press that he has really tried to learn his lesson from the crime, and is trying to straighten out his life:
"I had a good friend tell me I should go as far west as possible," Hood told the newspaper. "But I don't think that it's a situation that I should try to avoid. It was heinous. It was awful. Any bad thing you could say about it would probably fit it. But I think it's not trying to put it in a corner and forget it ever happened. I think you have to take it and learn from it and grow from it. ... I've got a debt to [the victim] that I can never repay, just trying to throw it away like it never happened would be the worst thing I could do for her."
Although a lot of detractors are going to use this as ammunition against Kiffin and continue to criticise his moves, criminality has not been a stranger to the UT program. In fact, three of the worst crimes ever committed by profesional football playerswere all done by former Phil Fulmer players.
Leonard Little
The most infamous incident involving an ex-Vol is Leonard Little. Following a party in 1998,Leonard Little crashed into and killed Susan Gutweiler in St. Louis, MO. Little’s BAC measured .19 after the accident, more than double the legal limit of 0.08. Little pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter, received 98 days in jail, four years probation, and 1000 hours of community service. He was also suspended for 8 games of the 1999 season.
After a night that Dwayne Goodrich, according to the Dallas Observer, has admitted included topless bars and alcohol (but not intoxication, according to Goodrich), he drove his BMW through the scene of a car accident in which pedestrians were attempting to free a man who was unconscious from a car that was on fire. Goodrich struck three of the pedestrians, killing two of them. Police reportedly believed that Goodrich was going 110 MPH at the time of the accident.
Donte Stallworth The player crashed his Bentley into a pedestrian in the City of Miami and struck and killed him. Stallworth was reportedly under the influence of alcohol in the early morning hours after a night of clubbing. He has been charged in the incident. Results of the players actions are still to be determined.
