Former Five Star Recruit Kevin Grady has been sentenced to serve a seven day jail term after failing to comply with the court orders following his drunk driving conviction in 2008.
ESPNMichigan reserve running back Kevin Grady is serving a seven-day jail sentence after pleading guilty Thursday to violating his probation for a drunken driving conviction last summer.
Grady entered the plea Thursday in Kent County District Court.
A senior, Grady had been on probation after pleading guilty to misdemeanor DWI. He was stopped by police July 2 in Wyoming, Mich., and had a blood-alcohol level of .24 -- three times the legal limit.
Court officials told The Grand Rapids Press that Grady failed to comply with his probation requirements in Ann Arbor, including community service, and also tested positive for opiates.
Grady was suspended for Michigan's season opener last fall against Utah but appeared in the team's final 11 games as a reserve. A heralded high school running back, Grady has 190 career carries for 703 rushing yards and nine touchdowns.
Wolverines head coach Rich Rodriguez is traveling and could not comment immediately on Grady's status with the team.
Bleacher Report Sports Writer Jay Nichols compares Grady and his latest transgression with former Michigan Five Star Recruit running back Kelly Baraka who never saw any action on the field due to his marijuana arrests. In 2008, Grady was arrested for driving while influence of alcohol. He was suspended for one game. A year prior, Grady had moved positions and rehabbed a torn ACL, and was ready for the challenges ahead. Obviously he wasn't mature enough.
What we have learned from Kevin Grady over the last year or two was that he is not mentally prepared to play student-athlete at the University of Michigan. He was given an olive branch by Coach Rodriguez, one he didn't have to give.
Coach Rod talked with his father, explained what needed to be done, and obviously that didn't get through. Michigan gave him a shot, when others would have cut lines with the player.
So what does Grady go do, he decided to skip probationary items on his "to-do list" from the judge. Not only is that stupid, it's intolerable. Not only does he deserve the seven days he got in the clink, he deserves to be dismissed from the University of Michigan Football program.
Only time will tell in seeing if this latest transgression is enough to get Grady kicked off the team, I think it will. Grady came into Ann Arbor with huge expectations and just simply has not been able to put together a successful career. Part of that was playing behind Mike Hart, part of it was injuries but also a third has to be his own actions outside the football field.
